This is the only one of the New 52 books that I have read. I have heard that some of them are a bit awful. However, I really enjoyed this one.

The story does not start with an origin story, but shows us the adult Aquaman in action, revealing the hero's origin through dialogue. The Trench is about a race of hungry aquatic humanoid monsters who attack a surface community. They are well conceived monsters.

Aquaman has generally been regarded as one of the less impressive DC superheroes. This story deals with this by making it the American public perception of Aquaman. These people really do think he is lame in comparison with Superman and Batman. Nevertheless, by dealing with the sea monsters, he earns the respect of the community. Mera, repeatedly called 'Aquawoman' to her irritation, shows herself to be an interesting, as well as a powerful charcter.

DC in recent years has often tended to make it's stories extremely dark. While there are some dark themes in this emerging story arc, the tone is surprisingly light on the whole, which fits with Aquaman's Silver Age origin. The first story ends with Aquaman and Mera adopting a dog whose owner has been killed. It has a nice goofiness to it.

I remember flipping through these..the artist is amazing and has a Neal Adams style..very detailed. The creatures were quite Lovecraftian.

I dont get the lameness of Aquaman. Seems hipsterish in origin. Of course he is blonde haired and blue eyed and that is seen as lame now, but I would argue his bearded harpoon hand version from the 90's is more dated than the Silver age.
