Most of the Dropkick Murphys material has been folk rock evoking The Pogues, However, their first album back in 1997 was a blistering Oi! punk record with some Irish folk thrown in for flavouring. I like skinhead stuff so this album really went down well with me. It has a real energy to it and a lot of passion. The last track 'Skinhead on the MBT' seems to almost define the very spirit of Oi! music. One of the strengths of the folk crossover influence is it gets you singing along in the rousing choruses.

Lyrically, the album deals with working class Irish immigrants in America. At times there is an annoying sentimentality to it, along with a nuanced socialism. However, it doesen't detract from the strength of the music. I'd say this is one of the strongest punk albums of the 90s.

Drinking a can of Murphys stout as I write this.

Yeah I like the DM's..their songs invoke drinking and fighting in an old school way. An old girlfriend was a big fan and let me wear her DM scarf which had their name like the Guinness logo.

I grew up with so many Irish, american or off the boat around the blue collar northeast. There are still a ton and I love that accent on the women.
